The BRICs propose the trade system against Trump’s tariffs

The BRICS forum countries set out on Monday, during a telematics summit, “refound” the global free trade system, to face the protectionism and tariff war unleashed by the US president, Donald Trump.

The summit was convened by the president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who said that the forum of emerging economies has “the necessary legitimacy to lead a re -foundation of the multilateral trade system, with modern, flexible bases and dumping to the needs of development.”

Lula was supported by China’s leaders, Xi Jinping; South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa; Iran, Peseshkian Masud; Egypt, Abdelfatah al sisi; as well as by the representatives of the other countries of the group, among which only Saudi Arabia was absent.

Each member country spread the interventions of its leaders, less Russia, although Brazil confirmed that President Vladimir Putin participated in the summit.

In his speech, the Brazilian president denounced that “the pillars of the international order created in 1945 are being overlapping and irresponsible,” and international institutions lose space and influence.

“The World Trade Organization (WTO) is paralyzed years ago” and “in a few weeks, unilateral measures transformed fundamental principles of free trade, such as the most favored or national treatment clauses,” he said.

According to Lula, all that represents “the formal burial of those principles”, to which is added the fact that practically all countries of the world with “victims of unjustified and illegal commercial practices.”

The Chinese leader stressed that “hegemonism, unilateralism and protectionism are increasingly uncontrolled” and that “commercial wars and tariffs fought by a certain country are seriously disturbing the global economy and undermining the international rules of trade.”

In that scenario, XI said that the BRICs, which represent 40% of global GDP, 26% of international trade and almost 50% of the world’s population, must “make the voice of the Global South” and oppose “all forms of protectionism.”

In the same vein, the president of South Africa was spoken, who also explained a response given by his country to Trump: “Reinforce cooperation and diversify commercial and investment associations with Africa, Asia, El Gulfo (Persian) and the Americas,” Ramaphosa said.

Due to the implementation of a new international order, the president of Iran, Masud fishshkian, who considered that the BRICs must “guide the transition to a multipolar, democratic and fair order.”

According to fishshkian, in that “new order”, “the voices of all countries, and especially developing countries” must be heard.
