The president of the COP16 of the United Nations Biodiversity, Susana Muhamad, said Friday that the conference was a “historical” appointment that managed to meet 100 % of its objectives and reach agreements that had not been achieved in 30 years.

“It has been qualified by countries as a historic copy,” said Muhamad, Minister of Environment of Colombia, in a video message posted on her X profile, hours after negotiations in Rome were closed with an agreement.

The COP16 was carried out in Cali (Colombia) in November 2024, but a consensus was not achieved due to the lack of Quorum, so this week the negotiations were resumed at the headquarters of the United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO) in Rome.

This second attempt did end successfully and the organization announced last night that the first global plan to finance the conservation of nature had been closed, among other points.

IMPACT OF THE COP16 Agreement

They are agreements “that they had not been able to do in 30 years,” Muhamad said, but necessary to implement the global Kunming-Montreal biodiversity framework, a historic agreement signed in 2022 establishes 23 objectives for the protection of biodiversity to meet from here to 2030.

The president of the COP16 especially highlighted the creation of the dedicated fund for the Convention, a proposal that allows “having a biodiversity financing capacity adequate for the needs of life care”.

The pact will mobilize 200,000 million dollars annually until 2030.

Muhamad also highlighted the monitoring plan, with “very technical and specific indicators” to measure the progress of the 23 objectives, and how citizens will be reported on the fulfillment of the global framework.

“Colombia has exercised a process of being host and presidency that has been qualified by the same parties as historical,” concluded the minister.
