Dominican filmmaker and documentary filmmaker René Fortunato died this Saturday with 67 years in Santo Domingo, the General Directorate of Film (DGCINE) reported, an entity that highlighted his work in rescuing the collective memory of “our nation”.

The entity said in a statement that its “artistic legacy and its tireless commitment to Dominican history and identity have been fundamental for the strengthening of our cinematography.”

DGCINE affirmed in a document that Fortunato presented his work with a rigorous vision and a compromised narrative, since he not only documented characters and processes, but also sowed awareness in generations of filmmakers and citizens.

Fortunato was the filmmaker of “Signal Works” as ‘April: La Trinchera del Honor’; The trilogy about (ex -dictator Rafael) Trujillo; ‘Balaguer: the inheritance of the tyrant ”;’ Bosch: President on the imperial border? He stressed that the deceased was one of the pillars of non-fiction Dominican cinema, and that his artistic legacy and his tireless commitment to Dominican history and identity have been fundamental for the strengthening of our cinematography, ”said DGCINE.

“In these moments of deep regret, we express our condolences to their relatives, colleagues and the entire cultural community of the country. His departure leaves an irreparable vacuum, but his work will remain alive as a testimony of the dignity and historical memory of our Dominican Republic,” concluded the message of the entity.

Fortunato premiered at the beginning of the month that it was his last documentary: ‘The triumph of democracy ”, in what he considered a balance of an old debt he had with the public that follows his filmography for more than 30 years.

The work deals with the last part of the 12 -year newspaper of former president Joaquín Balaguer, the rise to the power of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) in 1978 and the racist campaign that executed sectors against the former leader of that organization José Francisco Peña Gómez, of Haitian origin.
