In 2025, the Gender Gap Report of the World Economic Forum revealed significant advances for Mexico internationally. The country climbed 10 positions, located in the 23rd place globally. In the Latin America and the Caribbean region also advanced five places.
These results are mainly due to progress in the participation of women in public positions and in the area of health. In this last line the information presented that could indicate a change in the methodology is striking because in fact there is no comparable historical information.
In any case, Mexico has maintained an ascending trend in its global positions throughout the 19 editions of the study. However, still in the economic context, The country faces challenges that are evidenced in which 113 of 148 countries occupieswith a four -position setback. Its score in relation to the region is lower in 4.6 percentage points with respect to the average, so it is important to deepen it.
The economic participation indicator consists of five sections: labor participation, salary equity, estimation of perceived income (income level), women in leadership positions (legislators and senior positions both in the private and public sphere) and working women in the professional and technical sphere.
In two of the five indicators there are advances, these indicators were:
- Labor participation, that is, the percentage of women who are part of the workforce, a position advanced.
- Working women in the professional and technical sphere with a five -position progress.
The indicators that presented setbacks are:
- Estimated income perceived by women with a fall in a position.
- Women in leadership positions, with decrease in three positions.
- Salary equity with a four -place setback.
When inquire about complementary data in terms of labor participation and leadership that also presents the Gender Gap we have that women in leadership positions in the private sector barely represent 15.7% and women in seating councils of administration ascends just 11.5%.
In tune with these figures, women owners of companies are around 11.2%.
When comparing Mexican figures with Colombian, a country whose cultural context could resemble and is in the same region, the figures are relatively higher: 24.6%, 20.8%and 22.4%, respectively. This shows that it is possible to transform the reality of the country with appropriate policies and actions.
As for cultural factors that influence female labor inclusion, Colombia also presents more favorable indicators. The difference between men and women in the time dedicated to domestic and unpaid care tasks is 12.4 percentage points, while in Mexico it amounts to 16.66. On average, Mexican women dedicate 27.77% of their time to these activities, compared to 11.11% of men.
This contrast shows that it is possible to overcome traditional gender roles and foster both the labor participation of women and the co -responsibility of men in care and domestic work.
Another relevant issue is the choice of Stem races (for its acronym in English, science, technology, engineering and mathematics) by women, Mexican figures show that 35.87% of men graduate from these careers, while only 14.26% of women do so, perpetuating salary differences because Stem type professions are usually better paid.
Close gender gaps in Mexico and in the world demands a collective commitment of governments, educational institutions, media, companies, organizations, communities, families and citizenship, to add efforts to build the equity that the country requires.
