The musical ‘Emilia Pérez’ advances this Tuesday on its path to the Oscars by obtaining six pre-candidacies, leading the board of preselections that stood out for the scarce presence of Hispanic and Latin productions.
The film, starring Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón and produced by Netflix, was shortlisted in the categories of best international film, makeup and hairdressing, original soundtrack and sound.
In addition, ‘Mi Camino’ and ‘El Mal’, two of the songs that represent the musical directed by Frenchman Jacques Audiard, also received the nomination for best original song.
Along with ‘Emilia Pérez’ is ‘I’m Still Here’, by Brazilian filmmaker Walter Salles, in the shortlist for best international film.
For its part, the soundtrack of ‘The Room Next Door’, by Pedro Almodóvar, by Spanish composer Alberto Iglesias, also advances in the Academy’s original soundtrack category, which will be announced to their nominees on January 17.
The other musical, ‘Wicked’, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, won four nominations, including best soundtrack, visual effects, sound, and hair and makeup.
Closely followed by the Roman epic ‘Gladiator II’; ‘Alien: Romulus’, by Uruguayan director Fede Álvarez; and the drama ”Dune: Part Two’, with three Oscar nominations.
In the documentary category, ‘Frida’, by the Peruvian Carla Gutiérrez, stands out, based on the artist’s own diary and which is narrated by Fernanda Echeverría, who plays the Mexican artist, but also has an original archive of the voice of the painter

The short documentary film about a teenager with autism by Colombian Julio Palacio, ‘Makayla’s Voice: A Letter to the World’, also advanced on its way to greater recognition from the Hollywood Academy.
In addition, ‘París 70’, by Spanish filmmaker Dani Freixas, with Luisa Gavasa and Alain Hernández and which has been nominated for the 2024 Goya and Forqué Awards, entered the preselection for best short film along with ‘The Masterpiece’ (‘The great work ‘), a tense drama of classism, racism and social prejudices by also Spanish Àlex Lora Cercós.
The films announced this Tuesday are part of the so-called ‘shortlists’ that are made up of the semi-finalists for the Oscars in ten of their categories and are the prelude to the nominations that will be announced on January 17.
The 97th edition of the Oscars will take place on March 2 in Los Angeles
