The growing number of dogs and cats in the homes of Latin America has increased the need to adopt health care, especially to preserve the well -being of animals and that of humans who interact with them. Precisely, this phenomenon has been the axis of veterinary days 2025, the most important Congress in South America in veterinary medicine of pets, held in Argentina.
On a population that reached 663 million people in 2024, according to figures from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), it is estimated that in the region there are about 200 million pets.
“Dogs and cats help improve the lives of tutors for their love. That is why, the amount of animals that are now part of the families,” Carol Carol Galli, corporate director of Strategic Marketing of Biogenesis Biogenesis Bagó, a Argentine biotechnological company that presented its novelties in the veterinary days, told Efe.
The adoption of pets has increased from the Covid-19 Pandemia, by factors such as confinement, teleworking and company emotional need.
According to data from the Euromonitor market firm, the population of small -sized cats and dogs in Latin America recorded annual growth rates of 7 and 8%, respectively, between 2018 and 2023.
“During the pandemic, people felt very alone. There was a huge increase in adoption and also in awareness about the use of veterinary medications and prevention, because people were closer and for longer with their pets,” Galli said.
In Argentina alone, which has 47 million inhabitants, there are about 20 million pets -about 14 million dogs and about 6 million cats -according to data from the Triplethree International market research firm.

One more of the family
“The animals were previously called pets, a term that comes from the word ‘talisman’ because it was believed that they were lucky. Today the reality is another: they are considered company animals, one more member of the family. And that leads to the tutors to take more collections to improve the welfare of the animals,” Veterinary Physician Leandro Martínez Melo, responsible for the segment of biogeenesis animals, told EFE.
According to data from the statista portal, eight out of ten Argentines have adopted a company animal, a figure that is also high in Brazil, Mexico and Chile and reveals the importance of dog and cat care that coexist with humans.
Martínez Melo listed basic aspects for the well -being of animals, such as providing proper diet and giving them fresh water, taking them to exercise daily, fulfilling the vaccination calendar and visiting the veterinarian at least twice a year.
Care against fleas, ticks, lice and mosquitoes are also important through the use of external antiparasitics, a segment in which Bagó biogenesis has just launched its new Bagogard line, with ‘pipettes’ for dogs and cats.
In the 33 veterinary days, organized by Intermédica on May 11 and 12 in Buenos Aires, Bagó Bagó also presented the rest of its portfolio oriented to pets, which includes vaccines, antiparasitic, antiartrósic, dermatological and oral hygiene products.
A single health
Bagó Bagó, which has a strong presence in Latin America and other markets in Asia, Middle East and North Africa, works with focus on the concept of “a single health”, which takes into account the interrelation between animal and human health.
“Responsible tenure implies vaccination, uneasy, animal protection, care that is very important to avoid zoonoses, diseases that are transmitted between animals and humans,” said Galli.
Among these diseases are anger, which causes the death of a person every nine minutes in the world and can be prevented through vaccination, and vervincis, caused by parasites.
