Two years after season 1, the release date for Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender has been announced.

The series is an adaptation of Nickelodeon’s animated Avatar: The Last Airbender. While the original show is universally acclaimed, the live-action version had a more divisive reception, sporting a 62% critics’ score and 70% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender cast includes Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dalls Liu as Zukko, and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh.

Now, Netflix has revealed that Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 will arrive on the platform on Thursday, June 25, 2026. The upcoming season will focus on Aang learning how to master the element of earth in his continued fight against the Fire Nation. It will also introduce Toph (Miya Cech), a blind earthbender who helps train the protagonist.

What To Expect From Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2

Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 will adapt “Book 2: Earth” of the original animated show. This means the Earth Kingdom will be the core focus of the upcoming episodes, which will be threatened by an even deeper presence by the Fire Nation. Season 1 touched on the Earth Kingdom with King Bumi, but will go full force in the upcoming episodes.

The next chapter for the live-action series comes after Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1 ended with Aang using the Ocean Spirit to drive the Fire Nation away from the Northern Water Tribe. At the same time, Bumi is dethroned by Azula, Zuko’s sister, who takes command of Omashu in the process, setting up her bigger role in season 2.

There have also been notable behind-the-scenes changes for season 2. After the release of season 1, showrunner Albert Kim stepped down. While he’ll continue to be an executive producer, his duties were shared by Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani for the remainder of the series. It’s unclear what this new vision will mean for the series’ story progression.

If it’s anything like season 2 of the original show, then the story will follow Team Avatar as they try to save the Earth Kingdom from the Fire Nation’s conquest. However, it’ll also involve Aang trying to master earthbending, which will prove an important yet difficult task as he continues his rigorous training.

How Long Will The Wait Be For Avatar Season 3?

With season 2’s release date confirmed, it’s only a matter of time before season 3, which will be the series’ last, also gets a confirmed release date. Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed back-to-back, with production on the whole series wrapping in November 2025. This means it’s possible there won’t be a big wait between the final two seasons of the show.

However, season 1 came out in early 2024, with season 2 arriving almost two-and-a-half years later. While this wait probably won’t reflect when Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3 comes out, it wouldn’t be surprising if the series doesn’t conclude until mid-2027 or later. But, it appears that conclusion is becoming more real by the day.

With Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s live-action rendition coming out in less than three months, it remains to be seen if the show can redeem itself in the eyes of critics and audiences. Since there will be new showrunners as the story grows more serious, it seems poised to gather new momentum as it continues to reimagine the original.
