As Captain James Tiberius Kirk faces his final challenge in Star Trek‘s universe, the former captain of the Enterprise just debuted awesome new threads that fans are hailing as his best ever.
The new uniform speaks directly to why Kirk’s return is so key to the Federation’s survival…
Captain Kirk Debuts New Uniform as an Ally of the Borg
In today’s Star Trek: The Last Starship #5, the last remaining members of the Federation attend a massive summit to decide their path through the aftermath of the Burn – a cosmic event which destroyed every active warp core, save for those safeguarded by the evolved Borg.
Indeed, it’s the Borg who brought back James Kirk, stating that in a world of cynicism and lost hope, his belief in a better tomorrow is vital to the Federation’s survival.
Star Trek: The Last Starship #5 comes from the creative team of Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Adrián Bonilla, Lee Loughridge and Clayton Cowles.
Up until now, Kirk has been shown in a yellow uniform as a tactical officer. However, as of the Babel Conference, Kirk is back to captain status, fighting for the Federation’s survival despite prejudice directed against him due to his clone resurrection as the former Borg’s hands.
This is the first time fans have seen Kirk in his uniform in-story, however amazing covers from Mike Allred and Francesco Francavilla (above) have showcased the retro sci-fi look.
Designed by Adrián Bonilla, the uniform speaks directly to why Kirk’s return is so key to the Federation’s survival, evoking a hopeful vision of tomorrow that is very far away from what those currently in power can imagine.
Kirk Faces His Ultimate Challenge in the Emerald Chain
Sadly, Kirk’s awesome wardrobe isn’t enough to save the galaxy. The Babel Conference goes disastrously as Andoria, Orion Prime and Fereginar reveal a new alliance known as the Emerald Chain. While this group promises trade and defense treaties, it strips away all the positive aspects of the Federation, effectively acting as a gangster syndicate with no agreed rule of law.
Kirk’s ally Captain Sato brands the Emerald Chain “a protection racket”, and it’s hard to argue against his assessment. The Emerald Chain is the ultimate expression of the galaxy’s cynicism, effectively acting as a dark opposite of the Federation.
While the Federation isn’t finished quite yet, the Babel Conference is seemingly the last chance for Sato and Captain Kirk to make a difference, righting the universe and bringing back Star Trek‘s fundamental sense of optimism and cooperation.
