After 19 years of career, Andrés Guardado, the historic Mexican midfielder, has decided to retire from professional soccer.

The current Club León player made a live broadcast from the team’s stadium, where he thanked all those who supported him since his beginning as a footballer.

Guardado said he was especially grateful to Eduardo Berizzo, current coach of León, for having restored the enthusiasm he had for the sport since he was a child.

“The little prince” did not forget any of the clubs in which he played, thus giving thanks to Atlas, the club in which he formed.

“Thank you to Atlas that trained me, that gave me the opportunity to become a footballer and then to each of the teams to which I belonged. To Deportivo la Coruña, to Valencia, to Bayer Leverkusen, to PSV, to Betis and the truth is that I would not know how to thank the trust they had in me and the moments I lived there,” he expressed.

The former captain of the Mexican team shared that possibly this Sunday will be his last game as a professional, where León will face Monterrey in search of their place in the Play-In.

Andrés Guardado stated that in the near future he could continue to be linked to the world of football.

Legacy of Andrés Guardado

Andrés Guardado debuted with Atlas at the age of 19, after two seasons he left for the old continent to play for La Coruña, a transfer that cost around 3.5 million euros.

In the same club he reached his highest market value, which was 12 million euros at the age of 23 and for the 2011-2012 season he became champion of the second division of Spain. Its current market value is one million euros, according to the site transfermarkt.es.

In 2012, “The Little Prince” arrived at Valencia for a price of 7 million euros, 3 years later he arrived at PSV Eindhoven, the club where he lived his best period as a player.

In the Dutch club he was champion of the Eredivisie on 2 occasions and also won a double in the Dutch Super Cup.

In 2014, Andrés went on loan to Leverkusen, where he could not display his best version as a player, so his time at the German club was very short.

At 31 years old, Guardado joined Real Betis for a price of 5 million euros and after 7 seasons he won the Copa del Rey.

Towards the end of his career, the historic number 18 decided, to the surprise of many, to arrive at Club León, where unfortunately he did not have the closure of his career that he would have expected.

Regarding his time with the Mexican team, Andrés, being captain and for some coaches an undisputed player, managed to obtain 3 gold cups and attended 5 World Cups.
