The Nancy Meyers movie that Netflix passed on is moving forward at Warner Bros. with a star-studded cast. The filmmaker is known for writing and directing several critically and commercially successful romantic comedies, such as The Parent Trap (1998), What Women Want (2000), Something’s Gotta Give (2003), It’s Complicated (2009). Her last movie, The Intern, was released in 2015.
Meyers’ next movie was originally going to be produced by Netflix but, back in 2023, the streamer became concerned about its hefty budget that exceeded well over $100 million and decided to shelve the project. Netflix reportedly approved a $130 million budget, but the director was seeking $150 million, leading to a stalemate between them.
Now, Warner Bros. has announced that Nancy Meyers’ untitled movie is officially moving forward at the studio with Penélope Cruz, Kieran Culkin, Jude Law, Emma Mackey and Owen Wilson in final negotiations. The studio has also set a theatrical release date for December 25, 2027. The log line is under wraps, and any previously reported log line is incorrect.
Jude Law previously starred in Nancy Meyers’ The Holiday (2006), while Kieran Culkin starred in Father of the Bride (1991) and Father of the Bride Part II (1995), both of which Myers co-wrote.
Nancy Meyers’ next movie was originally slated for Netflix, with both Owen Wilson and Penélope Cruz previously attached, and Scarlett Johansson and Michael Fassbender in discussions. The budget ranged from $130 million to $150 million, with $80 million earmarked for above-the-line costs, which Netflix couldn’t accommodate.
Two days after Netflix dropped the project in March 2023, it shifted to Warner Bros., who have been eager to move forward with it. Adam Driver was also briefly considering joining the cast before committing to Heat 2.
As for its current cast, Penélope Cruz won an Oscar for Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), having received additional nominations for Volver (2006), Nine (2009), and Parallel Mothers (2021). Kieran Culkin is also a recent Oscar winner for A Real Pain (2024) who previously received three Emmy nominations for his performance as Roman Roy in HBO’s Succcession.
Jude Law is a two-time Oscar nominee for The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) and Cold Mountain (2003), while Emma Mackey is best known for her breakout role in the Netflix series Sex Education, and will star in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Narnia movie for Netflix. Now, this star-studded cast will unite for Nancy Meyers‘ next movie.
