The NBA announced this Tuesday, on the day of the Cup final in Las Vegas, a change in format for the All-Star that will come into effect in February 2025 and that provides for a four-team mini-tournament, with a prize of 125,000 dollars per player of the winning team.

After years of speculation about the options to revive the all-star game, which is increasingly less competitive, the NBA will distribute the 24 most voted players into three different teams of eight members each and will add the winning team of the ‘Rising Stars’ in one four-way mini-final.

In total, three matches will be played: two semi-finals and one final. The first team to reach or exceed 40 points in each duel will be the winner, the NBA reported in a statement.

In an attempt to offer a more competitive spectacle, the NBA will distribute a total of 1.8 million dollars in prizes. Each member of the champion team will take home a check for $125,000, the finalists will pocket $50,000 and the third and fourth places will receive $25,000.

The three all-star teams will be named after their ‘general managers’, former players Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith.

Barkely, O’Neal and Smith must choose from the 24 players most voted for by fans to form their respective teams.

This new All-Star format will premiere on Sunday, February 16 at Chase Stadium in San Francisco, home of the Golden State Warriors.

The NBA reported this Tuesday that voting will begin on December 19.
