EFE.- The painting “Head of a Woman”, made by the artist Vincent van Gogh in 1885 in the Dutch city of Nuenen, will return to the Netherlands after more than 3,000 people in addition to the Ministry of Culture, different funds and companies contributed the 8.6 million euros necessary to buy it from a British collector.

The Noordbrabants Museum, located in the Dutch city of Den Bosch (Bolduque), will permanently hang on its walls the work “Head of a Woman”, a portrait made in March-April 1885 representing Gordina de Groot, the daughter of a farmer in Nuenen and one of the five people sitting around the table in his mythical painting “The Potato Eaters”.

Van Gogh and De Groot had a close relationship, she had posed several times for the artist and it was even mistakenly thought that the painter was the father of the child she was expecting, when she became pregnant without being married.

Van Gogh captured de Groot intimately, showing her hard life as a worker and making her the face of rural life in Brabant.

The fact that this painting was made in Nuenen, Van Gogh’s last residence before heading to France, gives it a special value for Noordbrabants, which with this painting has made the largest purchase in its history: 8.6 million euros thanks to the contributions of more than 3,000 donors, public and private funds and companies, in addition to the Ministry of Culture and several municipalities in Brabant.

Helewise Berger, curator of 19th and 20th century art, noted that “although Van Gogh used earthy tones, there are many colors to discover in the painting and that makes it exceptional and attractive: a key piece in his work.”

This work of art, which can already be admired in Noordbrabants, will go on tour to museums in the province in 2026.
