The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) announced this Friday that it plans to expand its trading hours to 22 hours a day, five days a week, on its electronic trading platform due to “growing demand.”
The initiative, which must be approved by the securities regulator, “underscores the strength of our US capital markets and the growing demand for our listed securities around the world,” NYSE head of markets Kevin Tyrrell said in a statement.
The Exchange intends for trading hours on its all-electronic NYSE Arca platform to run from 1:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. East Coast time on weekdays, excluding holidays.
The normal session on the New York Stock Exchange lasts from 9:30 in the morning to 4:00 in the afternoon ET, while on the NYSE Arca, which is the main electronic stock exchange platform in the US, trading is from 4 morning to 8 pm ET.

According to specialized media, the NYSE is trying to keep up with mobile stock market applications such as Robinhood, which allows securities to be traded 24 hours a day on weekdays, while cryptocurrency markets operate without interruption.
The purchase and sale of stocks or index funds on NYSE Arca during the extended hours will continue to go through the settlement infrastructure Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), which has also announced plans to extend its hours, the note indicated.
