The International Atomic Energy Agency (OIEA) denounced this Friday that the Ukrainian nuclear plant in Zaporiyia, under Russian occupation, has lost the external electrical connection again and depends on its own emergency generators.

“Our team at the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant informed me this morning that the plant has lost all its external energy for the second time in five days,” said the general director of the United Nations Atomic Agency Rafael Grossi.

“Its backup diesel generators are now providing electricity for their nuclear safety and protection functions,” he added on a message on Twitter.

While the six reactors of the plant are turned off, the continuous supply of electricity is essential to keep the nuclear fuel inside and avoid a possible accident.

The OIEA, which has two observers present at the plant, tries to promote the creation of a security zone around the plant and for this Grossi was yesterday in Moscow, which has been appropriate by decree of the occupied plant.

Russia and Ukraine have blame mutually blame for the surroundings of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, which have damaged some of the installation buildings and the electricity supply system.

“This repeated loss of energy is a deeply worrying event and underlines the urgent need of a nuclear safety protection zone around the place,” said Grossi.

The Ukrainian regulator has also warned in the past of the delicate situation, since if emergency generators run out of fuel or stop working for any reason there could be a fusion of the core of the reactors and a potentially catastrophic radioactivity release.
