The president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo de León, said Friday, after a meeting with his Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum, who expects an eventual rail connection with the Mayan train of the American country.

Although Guatemala does not currently have active rail transport, Arévalo de León indicated at a press conference that the rail connection “has enormous potential” in search of the development of both nations and the region.

“Connecting the Mayan train with Guatemala and eventually with Belize is a vision that we share and for which we agreed to promote the start of ‘Trinational’ negotiations, as well as the respective feasibility studies,” said the ruler.

The president’s words took place after a meeting with Sheinbaum, visiting a few hours in Guatemala, specifically in the department (province) of Petén, in the north of the Central American country.

“We are conceiving the Mayan train as a development solution that is not opposed but strengthens the search for a sustainable development model that also clearly protects the country’s biological, natural and cultural heritage,” said Arévalo de León.

“The Mayan train (in Guatemala) will not cross any existing reserve area,” said Arévalo de León.

Sheinbaum, on the other hand, detailed in the same way that he expects the rail connection not only for passenger transport, but also for loading.

“The Mayan train is a success in Mexico,” Sheinbaum complemented at the press conference.

Last May, Guatemala signed an agreement with the United States so that the American nation collaborates in the modernization of its ports and also in its existing railway, composed of around 400 kilometers and has not had activity for several decades.

Precisely last week the Government of Arévalo de León created a committee for the revival of rail transport, although there are no specific dates or details for the activation of the same.
