The production of sterile flies will help to disappear the boreride worm in Mexico

The appearance of the boreride worm is a problem of high economic losses for Mexico, so the construction of a sterile fly factory is urgently required.

It is urged to resume past actions that were the guideline to keep Mexico free of the barren’s worm, as was the case of the sterile fly production plant in Chiapa de Corzo, Chiapas, said Alonso Fernández Flores, president of the National Association of Federal Inspection Establishments (Anetif).

He recalled that the plant stopped operating in 2012, even and when it helped for several years to keep free of the borer worm in cattle.

According to the entrepreneur, the facilities had a production of 500 million insects a week, allowing sterile flies to be massively dispersed in national territory to stop the advance of the boreride worm.

The borers, known as Coquerel, is a larva that feeds on living meat, of hot blood (cattle, goats, domestic and wild animals), and that can even affect humans causing myiasis.

The larvae are forced parasites of live animals; The infestations occur when the female fly puts its eggs on the edges of superficial wounds and occasionally in mucous membranes, once the larvae feed on living and fluid tissues, they grow and enlarge the wound.

Flies have an exceptional displacement capacity, they can travel 10 to 20 kilometers in tropical climates with a high density of animals and up to 300 kilometers in less than two weeks.

“These parasites can enter wounds as small as the bite of a tick and if infestation is not treated, it can be deadly; hot blood and humans are susceptible to infestation,” said the National Service of Health, Safety and Agrifood Quality (Senasica).

Derived from the above, the need to eradicate this plague was seen, so in 1957 an eradication program was initiated to eliminate the borer in the United States, using a biological control technique (flies sterilization), developed by the Agricultural Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

In 1962, based on an agreement between Mexico and the United States, thus began the dispersion of sterile flies in our country, with the aim of establishing a barrier to the south of the United States, Senasica recalled.

Originally it was thought to establish a barrier with these flies to keep the areas released from the north of the Mexican Republic free from the insect.

Dispersion was carried out in a strip of 80 to 100 km wide through the states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo León and Coahuila.

“Some time later it was found that this barrier was not enough to avoid reinstatements, because the native fly can fly larger distances, so the dispersion task towards the other border states and south was increased,” said Senasica.

He added that Mexican farmers from the affected areas noticed for three years the decrease in animals.

The Mexico-American Commission for the prevention of Afitosa fever was responsible for coordinating work in five states of northern Mexico. By August 28, 1972, the American Mexico Commission was formed for the eradication of the boreride worm of the cattle (Comex) to eliminate this pest from Mexico and move to the south the barrier of the sterile fly.

In 1976, a new plant for the production of sterile male adults was built in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, with production capacity of 500 million sterile flies per week.

For the year of 1977, the campaign personnel were 107 employees, with a budget of 308 million pesos. Later, in 1982, the commission had 2,031 workers.

The actions of the Chiapas plant, replaced those of the old mission plant, Texas, which closed in January 1981.

In 1991, the decree was issued by the territories of the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatan free of the boreride of cattle C. Hominivorax.

Javier Garcia Manrique, the then director of the Comexa, said that from 1972 to 1990, 286 thousand 750 cases of choice in hot blood in Mexico were notified.

“We consider it very important to point out that the flip flip of the borer, only infects, feeds and survives in tissue of hot blood and living humans, then transforms to pupa and falls to the ground and if this is conducive (moisture temperature) hatches in a fly to continue the cycle, so the meat does not represent any risk of transmission or infestation to human beings or animals Federal Inspection type establishments.

Alonso Fernández Flores called on the government, industry and associations to work together from each of the links, to join and make a common front in Mexico before the resurgence of the boreride of cattle, since it is a problem that requires the attention and commitment of all those who are part of the production chain, actively participating in the strategies developed and strengthening the surveillance in the points of entry into the country.

He highlighted the importance of allocating resources to the National Health, Safety and Agrifood Quality Service (Senasica), to strengthen its technical, administrative and operational structure that allows them to deal with this emergency and those that can put the zoosanitary status of Mexico at risk.

“As representatives of the meat industry, we support and recognize the efforts and strategies that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, through the National Service of Health, Safety and Agrifood Quality, has developed and implemented to deal with the health emergency we face,” said Alonso Fernández Flores.

He added that Mexico is facing a problem that represents high economic losses and therefore, the meat industry reaffirms its commitment to work together with the Ministry of Agriculture to strengthen actions and protect health status, safeguarding Mexican livestock and international trade.

The president of Anetif reiterated his support for Senasica and ordered to join actively, to the actions taken to address the health emergency.
