It is still early in the morning. At seven o’clock I am already walking through the Camí de Ronda, one of the old smuggled routes that go from Bahia in Bahia on the Costa Brava, in the Spanish Northeast. When I woke up in my hotel’s bed and I saw the first sun rays bathing the bay and the Illes Medes, which are right next to the coast, with a bright light, I simply could not stay in bed longer. I quickly jumped out of bed and lowered the stairs stealthily. Only a few steps from the hotel entrance door begins the sand beach, where an early swammer has just finished his morning dip. On the opposite side of the bay, I turned to the Camí de Ronda and now I do not tire of the vibrant colors. The small waves that were heard at night now carefully stroke the sand. After it rained to jugs yesterday, the sun feels good. I am happy and grateful for the sun and because everything along the road is green and flourishing.
Sa Riera belongs to the small town of Begur and consists of just a few residential buildings nestled between the hills on both sides of the bay. In fact, it is only frequented by bathers during the summer months, since there are hardly any restaurants or supermarkets. Most houses have been second private residences for decades, which means that those who live here or come on weekends know each other, as a town community.
For decades, my accommodation was also a small family, traditional and traditional hostel. But in 2019, the family sold the building and, under Celia’s expert, the Hostel Ses Negres has become a real treasure, the type of recommendation that you would only recommend to your best friends. With only 17 rooms (plus some small apartments), the hostel is pleasantly small. I feel at home instantly, because everything here transmits intimacy and privacy. The rooms are furnished in a simple but with love, and the location, right on the beach, is unbeatable. Seeing the sea from the bed is a dream. But, above all, it is people who make me feel so relaxed and happy. It shows that they love his work and put everything in him.
The gastronomic concept of the hostel is based on fresh products in the region. For its popular rice, chef genis uses various rice varieties from neighboring Pals: bay for a rice broth similar to a stew, and Carnaroli for the driest rice, similar to paella. For lunch, light fish and seafood dishes are served on the small terrace in front of the sea, being the Peix de Roca one of the star dishes. However, in the traditional Catalan cuisine, the ingredients not only come from the sea, but also from the mountain.
Therefore, the letter is a bit more exclusive for dinner, which allows the creativity of author cuisine. Genis loves the combination of Sea and mountain sea and mountain. Yesterday a delicious soup prepared me with a touch of lemon as an incoming, followed by a eggplant glazed in the Asian style with cheese from a local cheese shop, black garlic and hazelnuts. Next, a gambas gazpacho with avocado and an egg yolk cured and creamy. For dessert, I could try the Xuixo de Girona in La Brasa a grill xuixo on Catalan cream with ice cream.
Just remembering the delights makes my mouth water. I wonder if the breakfast buffet will be open. I finish my morning walk and return to the hostel, which, with its turquoise windows, is easily recognized from afar. And I’m lucky: the buffet is already prepared. It is just as I like more: along with delicious crossings, bread, cheese and sausages, there are a lot of freshly cut, natural yogurt (the phagea) and real coffee. Delicious!

The shelter opens the whole year. My advice: come out of season to enjoy the bay almost alone. If you feel like swimming in summer, prepare for many visitors during the day. However, I also saw some bathers in the morning in May. The water was still frost, but it is supposed to be very healthy. In any case, I am looking forward to returning to do hiking and I hope you do good weather to breakfast on the beach 🙂.
