The commercial relationship between Spain and Mexico does not suffer and “has not stopped” despite the “ups and downs” in the political sphere between both countries, said this Thursday the executive president of the Spanish Export Credit Insurance Company (Cesce), Pablo de Ramón-Laca.

“We have always understood each other very well (Spain and Mexico). Our companies have understood each other regardless of specific moments where politics interferes, but the strong relationship between the two countries has not stopped,” said Ramón-Laca in a colloquium organized this Thursday by the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the Mexican capital with the name ‘Impact of geopolitics on international trade: challenges and opportunities for companies’.

Despite the “up and downs in the political sphere”, the president of Cesce highlighted that Spanish companies have a “very important” presence in the North American country, which many of them consider their “second home” and a “relevant” destination for national investments enhanced by the “pragmatism” that in his opinion the Executive of the Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, grants.

The Economic and Commercial Counselor of the Spanish Embassy in Mexico, María Peña, explained that the bilateral trade relationship between both countries amounts to 12,000 million euros annually in transportation and exports, so she concluded that if Mexico does “relatively poorly, it also has a direct impact on our economy.”

Even so, he warned of the new and “changing” international context, of greater fragmentation, in which the “erosion of democratic values and institutions” and the consolidation of China as a global economic power stands out, so he called for a consolidation of the Spanish business fabric in countries like Mexico.

Relations between both countries experienced moments of tension after the Spanish King Felipe VI was not invited to the inauguration of the Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, in October 2024, which the head of state justified by the lack of Spanish response to the request for forgiveness for its colonial past.

In response, the Spanish Government decided not to send any representative as a sign of protest in an unprecedented event.
