The manufacturing and maquila industry asked the government of Tamaulipas for a Mexico-United States and Canada Treaty free of tariffs on exports in the consultations held in view of the review of the trade agreement in 2026.

“The industry requested that it continue supporting the companies that are within the TMEC, that there will be no tariffs, because otherwise it will cease to be a free trade agreement,” says Ninfa Cantú Deándar, Secretary of Economy of Tamaulipas.

The official called on the industry, academics, secretaries, municipal presidents, deputies and senators to present their comments at the consultation tables towards the review of the TMEC in 2026.

“Tables were organized by sectors and that is where we work so that there is very good information on everything that the Ministry of Economy may need to make it known now in the review of the TMEC,” comments the head of the Ministry of Economy of Tamaulipas.

The industry highlighted that Tamaulipas is Mexico’s logistics platform due to its 19 commercial crossings, through the ports of Altamira and Tampico and another that is under development in Matamoros, Forbes Mexico tells Forbes.

In mid-2026, the governments of Mexico, the United States and Canada will begin reviewing the USMCA trade agreement. Such negotiations began at the end of September 2025 in the three nations, after they received opinions and recommendations for the USMCA to continue.

“We are very happy to promote one of the 15 Wellbeing Development Poles of Altamira,” says Ninfa Cantú Deándar.

He adds that the Wellbeing Development Poles are promoted by the President of the Republic, Claudia Sheinbaum, so “we are at a firm pace to attract the chemical, petrochemical, automotive, and also electrical and electronic industries to Altamira.”

The industry, which is expected to reach Altamira, is specialized and “we are about to finalize and sign the investment agreements,” he details.

Additionally, the automotive cluster in Matamoros and the electronics cluster in Reynosa are being promoted. “There are currently expansions of factories and plants in Matamoros, as well as a very large new investment, which is about to arrive of 250 million dollars.”

The official comments that Tamaulipas had a growth in its economy of 3.7 percent in the third quarter of this year.

“We are very happy in Tamaulipas because we are the fifth place in the state with the largest exports,” says Ninfa Cantú Deándar.

From January to September 2025, Tamaulipas’ exports increased 2 percent, which was insufficient to place it in that fifth position, reveals the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

The manufacturing and maquila industry of Tamaulipas exported more than 27,871 dollars of goods and services to the United States and Canada during three quarters of this year compared to sales of 27,309 million dollars in the same period last year.
