The United States Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Besent, rebuked China’s Minister of Commerce on Monday to qualify the tariffs of President Donald Trump of “joke”, but said he still had hopes of a great commercial agreement with Beijing, adding that he would require a very different formula from the commercial and monetary agreements of the past.

Besent, in statements to Bloomberg Television during a visit to Argentina, said that any negotiation between the United States and China would have to come from “above”, involving Trump and the Chinese president, Xi Jinping.

“These are not a joke. I mean they are great figures,” said Besent. “I think nobody thinks they are sustainable, they want them to remain here, but it is far from being a joke.”
