The temporary protection status (TPS) is a humanitarian program of the US government that allows to live and work legally in the United States to citizens of certain countries that are going through specific difficulties, in addition to being protected from deportations. The Biden administration significantly expanded this humanitarian program to include more than one million people.

Trump administration reduces the protection programn Temporal

Last month, a resolution of the United States Supreme Court allowed the Trump government to cancel the Temporary Protection Status Program (TPS) to more than 500,000 people from Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti and Nicaragua. In addition to canceling the temporary protection status program for the citizens of these countries, the Trump government has also decided to cancel the humanitarian permit for migrants who entered through the border between the United States and Mexico through the mobile application of the CBP, as well as for the citizens of Afghanistan. The above represents a million more people, which raises the total number of people whose immigration status will remain in the limbo to almost 1.5 million.

Accelerated deportations

From the legal point of view, the nature of these deportations raises questions about due administrative process. Unlike conventional migratory deportation processes, where the circumstances of an individual before a judge are evaluated at a hearing of an immigration court, the United States immigration service uses accelerated deportations to deport any person whose temporal protection status (TPS) has been canceled and no longer has legal status. During an accelerated deportation these people do not have a judicial hearing before an immigration judge, in addition to an immigration officer can initiate the accelerated deportation that can take only one day.

Since May, the United States immigration service has increased the implementation of accelerated deportations, which has resulted in family separations and has generated tension in communities from all over the United States. This tension has been manifested in the protests that have exploded throughout the country. Some protesters waved the Mexican flag, which forced the Mexican government to defend their reputation in these protests and generated a dialogue between the governments of the United States and Mexico.
