The UN International Investigative Commission for the Palestinian territories has concluded on Tuesday that Israel is committing a genocide against the Palestinian population in Gaza, a qualification that other international organizations, governments and non -governmental organizations already use.
The UN decision exposes the cruelty of the humanitarian situation that the Palestinian people live in the Gaza Strip, where life expectancy has fallen by half, from 75.5 years to 34.9 years, a reality against which the UN special rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese has already pronounced in March 2024.
In a report entitled ‘Anatomy of a genocide’, Albanese already said that “there are reasonable reasons to believe that the threshold from which it can be said that Israel has committed (genocide) has already been achieved.”
In addition, in November of that year, a UN Human Rights Committee explained that Israel’s military offensive “is consistent with the characteristics of a genocide.”
Since October 7, 2023, more than 64,800 people have died in Gaza, including more than 19,000 children, thousands of injured and hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced, many on several occasions.
Just three months after the war began, the Arab League said that what was happening in the Gaza Strip was “a massacre, a war of genocide and ethnic cleaning.”
Days later, on December 29, South Africa denounced Israel before the International Court of Justice (CIJ) for committing a ‘genocide’ in the strip, a complaint that was admitted and supported by Mexico, Nicaragua, Colombia and Libya, among other states.
The Government of Spain joined the complaint in June 2024, being the first European country to join this international demand. Months later Ireland also adhered to the European Union.
In parallel, the Lemkin Insituto for the prevention of genocide, appointed in honor of the lawyer who coined the term, declared that the situation between Israel and Palestine constitutes a case of ‘genocide’.
Amnesty International, on the other hand, concluded that Israel commits a crime against the population in Gaza in its report ‘is as if we were infrahuman beings’, which was published at the end of last year.
The Human Rights Watch organization denounced in another December 2024 report that Israeli forces are responsible for the crime against humanity of extermination and acts of genocide ‘for their actions in Gaza. With the extermination title and acts of genocide (‘Extermination and acts of genocide’), he stated that the Israeli government deliberately deprives the Palestinians of Gaza.
In similar terms, doctors without borders (MSF) have been manifested, which last June urged the European Union to exert a ‘real pressure’ at the political, economic and diplomatic level to stop the ‘genocide patterns’ and ‘ethnic cleaning’ observed in Gaza by Israeli forces.
The state of calamity of the Gazatis has also been denounced by two Israeli NGOs, B zelem and Physicans for Human Rights Israel (Phri), which in July 2025 stressed in reports that the Government of Jerusalem is committing a genocide in Gaza.
In these months, international civil society has also been showing its disagreement with Israeli performance in the strip through demonstrations in several cities around the world denouncing a ‘genocide’, as has happened in Washington, London or Madrid.
