Donald Trump’s administration said Friday that it had fulfilled the president’s promises to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” in reference to the United States, and to return Denali, the name that the native peoples of Alaska overlooks North America’s highest peak, its former name, Mount McKinley.
Changing the name of the body of water as it is used in the United States is within the purview of the Trump administration. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has already begun using the name “Gulf of America,” putting in a winter weather advisory that a low pressure area was moving “across the Gulf of America” toward Florida.
However, other countries do not have to follow suit. When President Trump first announced his plan to change the names, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded by suggesting that the United States should rename itself Mexican America.
“The Gulf of America, formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico, is one of the most vital assets in the nation’s history and economy,” the Interior Department said in a statement Friday.
The agency also said Friday that the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, a federal agency that oversees standardized geographic names, is working “expeditiously” to carry out Trump’s order to return former President William McKinley’s name to the Alaskan peak.
