The mayor of the municipality of San Felipe, in Baja California, José Luis Dagnino López, reported that the United States government revoked his tourist visa on Tuesday, after carrying out a “procedure” to enter the neighboring country.

In a post on his Facebook account, Dagnino López, from Morena, stated that he was notified of the visa revocation without an “explanation or reason” from the US authorities.

“It is important to specify that, until this moment, I have not received official information about the cause or reason that led the US authorities to make this decision, similar to what happened with various public actors in the country and in our state,” said the municipal president about the revocation of this document from almost fifty Mexican politicians and officials by the Donald Trump administration.

In the message, Dagnino López reiterated his commitment to “legality, transparency and public responsibility,” for which he explained that he “is taking the necessary steps to know the origin of this determination” and “proceed in accordance with what the laws and diplomatic processes establish.”

He also assured that this measure will not interfere with his responsibilities or activities as mayor of San Felipe.

“I will continue working with the same dedication, closeness and conviction that has always characterized me,” he stated.

Regarding the case, the media reported that the US government kept Dagnino López detained for 12 hours at the Centro, California, checkpoint, where he tried to enter that country to attend an official event, where he would receive a donation for the team of his local Fire Department.

The mayor of San Felipe joins the list of Baja California politicians whose visa has been withdrawn, since in May Carlos Torres, then husband of the governor of the entity, Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, also had this document canceled along with that of Ávila Olmeda.

According to the newspaper Milenio, this Thursday the US Government also revoked the visa of the general director of Investigation of the National Customs Agency of Mexico, Alex Tonatiuh, who is also responsible for the investigation of tax huachicol activities.

According to the same source, the senior manager commented that this procedure does not affect his responsibilities as it is an administrative and personal procedure.

The verification and cancellation of visas by the US is part of a policy that seeks to identify people who represent a public security threat due to having ties to organized crime groups or self-proclaimed terrorists, as well as figures who contradict the interests of the country.
