The Vatican asked the governments on Tuesday to close the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and warned that technology contains “the shadow of evil” for its ability to spread misinformation.
“The false media generated by artificial intelligence can gradually undermine the foundations of society,” says a new text about the ethics of AI, written by two departments of the Vatican and approved by Pope Francis.
“This issue requires careful regulation, since misinformation, especially through controlled media or influenced by AI, can spread involuntarily, feeding political polarization and social discomfort,” says the text.
Francisco, leader of the 1,400 million members of the Catholic Church since 2013, has focused its attention on ethical issues surrounding AI in recent years.

The Vatican says that AI has ‘the shadow of evil’ and asks that it be watched closely
Last week, the Pope sent a message about AI to the World Economic Forum (FEM) in Davos, warning the political, economic and business leaders that technology poses “critical concerns” about the future of humanity.
The Pope also spoke of AI at the G7 summit held in Italy last June, and said that people should not let the algorithms decide their destiny.
The new Vatican document, entitled “Antica et Nova” (old and new), analyzes the repercussions of AI in various sectors, such as labor market, health and education.
“As in all areas in which the human being is called to make decisions, the shadow of evil loop here,” says the document. “The moral evaluation of this technology must take into account how it is directed and use.”
