The Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico (ZMVM) registered during the dry-cable season (March, April and May) lower temperatures and a better air quality with respect to the atypical 2024, despite the constant heating trend that the region suffers, according to the balance of the dry-cálida season 2025 presented this Thursday by the authorities.

The records obtained during the months of the warm season confirmed the climatic tendency of constant warming, although not as many records were broken as in the same period of the previous year.

The month of April was the warmest, although in March the maximum temperatures were “anomalously positive” and reached five degrees Celsius above the average of the ZMVM.

In 2025, forty days have been counted with extreme temperatures and five heat waves were recorded in Mexico City (one in March, two in April and two in May). The longest was present for eleven days, between May 13 and 23.

The general coordinator of the National Meteorological Service of Mexico, Fabián Vázquez Romaña, explained this Thursday – at a press conference – that “from 1900 to 2025 we can see that from 1980 there are, consistently, a greater number of heat waves. Then, this is the scene of heating that has been giving in Mexico City and in much of the country”.

Better air quality

In terms of air pollution, the number of environmental contingencies has been lower in 2025 than in 2024.

The Valley of Mexico has reported six contingencies in 2025, while 2024 was the year with more negative scenarios in the last ten years, adding twelve situations. Despite this improvement, the values of the norm were exceeded in some days, especially ozone, especially in rainy days.

This improvement in air quality is due to the fact that the 2025 season was presented under a more humid climate scenario, with a neutral phase of high temperatures levels in the Pacific that briefly approached the low temperatures.

This decrease caused ozone concentrations to have been less frequent and intense in 2025 than in the previous year.

Gabriel Pérez Zaguilán, General Director of Air Quality of Mexico City, explained that in statistical terms “air quality is improving,” despite the fact that the value of these gases are being normalized.

In 2024 there were 31 % of clean days, while until July 2025 the percentage has been approximately 27 %, although this data is partial and could change at the end of the year.

For distinctions, carbon monoxide remained stable; Sulfur dioxide and PM10 and PM2.5 particles showed a decrease in the annual average of 2025 compared to 2024; Nitrogen dioxide also decreased on average.

Despite the improvement, the authorities indicate that the population must consult the quality of the air and take measures in relation to the scenarios and personal circumstances.
