It’s arguably the best time to get into The Witcher 3 right now. There are two whole expansions to play through, as well as hundreds of mods hand-crafted by the community.
That includes this new gem from Nexus Mods, which adds a brand-new feature to the game. If you’re a Witcher fan, you won’t want to miss it.
The Witcher 3’s Multiplayer Expansion Is Available Now
And Free To Download
Released by rejuvenate7, “Witcher Online” is a new mod for The Witcher 3 that does basically what it says on the tin. If you’ve ever played a lot of old-school PC multiplayer mods, you’ll feel right at home.
Here’s what the mod is all about: “Witcher Online is a mod that adds multiplayer to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Join servers to play with your friends, customize your character using Custom Player Characters and relax in taverns using Chill Out. Chat with strangers and perform emotes to roleplay with other players. Experience the incredible story of Geralt and Ciri from start to finish on your journey throughout the world of the Witcher. The focus of this mod is to allow you to see other players on their adventure exploring throughout the world.”
Note that a lot of this mod is angled at hanging out and running around together, rather than a full adventure/quest sync. A full-on optional multiplayer mode would be interesting for The Witcher 3, but given how single-player focused CD Projekt Red can be, that isn’t likely to come officially anytime soon.
For many Witcher fans, that works for them. The Witcher is a narrative experience first and foremost, and CD Projekt Red has already had issues with feature bloat. It stands to reason that adding an entire multiplayer aspect to the game would require much more development time and could cause issues with the team’s quality of life as they try to cram everything else in.
This Was Made By Fans, For Fans
Based on the work done in this mod, fans are already wondering whether its scope can be expanded in the future. If there’s one thing that The Witcher mod community is known for, it’s resiliency. Fans are also working on multiplayer and third-person mods for Cyberpunk 2077 as we speak, so we know how far this community has gone already.
Despite the lack of multiplayer in The Witcher 3, I’m content sitting back and enjoying the game as it is. The community has done a fantastic job of keeping the series alive.
