Williams team director, James Vowles, stated this Friday, in Brazil, that they are “exploring options with several teams interested” in hiring Argentine Franco Colapinto for the next Formula One season.
“We have been exploring possibilities with several teams that are interested at the moment,” but “it would be a mistake to speculate; There is nothing to really communicate beyond that,” Vowles said at a press conference at the Interlagos circuit, where the São Paulo Grand Prix is held.
The Williams boss described Colapinto as “exceptional”, who has resurrected the fervor for Formula One in Argentina at just 21 years old and with only five races in the premier category of motorsport.
“He is doing an extraordinary job on the track and, as I have said from the beginning, earn your position and the results will come,” he noted.
However, he called for “responsibility” when talking about the young pilot’s future.
“My responsibility is to make sure we do the right thing,” he said.
Likewise, he warned that Colapinto has only had a handful of races in F1 and invited him to continue learning, although at the same time he believes that “important” things are coming for him.
“He is earning his position. He has to do more things on the track to continue earning his position, but he is shining and that is why there is interest from the teams,” he said.
And he concluded: “We hope to have great news that we can talk about with everyone, but today it is not possible.”
Vowles confessed to being “really proud” of Franco, whom he has seen grow “tremendously” in the last two years.
“And to see his troop of fans out there is something incredible. Argentina has been going through a lot of pain and Colapinto’s emergence is good. “It is incredible to see an entire country respond to someone who is doing something great in sports,” he concluded.
In the Mexican test, held last week, Colapinto became the first Argentine to complete his first five races in F1 and his good performance has caused rumors in the specialized press about his next destination in the category.
