Civil and environmental organizations asked the Mexican government to present at COP30 an updated, ambitious and verifiable plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“The recent unfortunate events in Hidalgo, Puebla, San Luis Potosí, Veracruz, and Querétaro are expressions of the impacts that Mexico will experience with greater frequency and intensity if the climate crisis worsens,” they warned in a statement.

They explained that the commitment, known as Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), must be aligned with a trajectory towards net zero emissions, with clear goals by sector and public policies that accelerate the exit from fossil fuels, achieve zero deforestation, promote a substantial increase in renewable energies and mobilize public and private climate financing.

They added that the NDC must integrate adaptation and resilience guidelines with a strong focus on social justice and equity.

They asked President Claudia Sheinbaum to share with the international community, within the framework of COP30, Mexico’s new climate commitments.

They stated that the presence of the president at the meeting of heads of state, convened by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on November 6 and 7 in Brazil, will send a message of leadership, commitment and confidence in climate multilateralism, and in the priority attention to the climate crisis.

The statement is supported by organizations such as Greenpeace Mexico, El Poder del Consumidor, Environmental Policy and Legislation, Nuestro Futuro, Reacciona – Climate Action Network, Oceana, Mexican Center for Environmental Law, Jalisco Ecologist Collective, Climate Connections, Tierra Nuestra, among others.

The Mexican Climate Initiative (ICM), which heads the exhortation, recalled that it works on the development of studies and analysis of public policies that promote the reduction of emissions that cause global warming, in collaboration with authorities, academia, civil society and the private sector.
