An armed attack in the Historic Center of Mexico City left the leader of street vendors, former local representative and trans activist Diana Sánchez Barrios, injured, in addition to the death of one of her companions.

Sánchez Barrios was in the area with a group of people and armed individuals opened fire from a moving motorcycle, wounding at least three people at the scene, including Sánchez Barrios, who was hit by a bullet and taken to Siglo Hospital. XXI, while his companion was taken to a hospital where he died.

The Secretariat of Citizen Security of the Mexican capital deployed an operation in the area to find those responsible, although so far no arrests have been reported.

Diana Sánchez Barrios has been a visible figure in defending the rights of informal traders in the capital, and has been involved in controversies throughout her career for also being a trans activist.

Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, head of the Cuauhtémoc mayor’s office, the district where the incident occurred, confirmed that Sánchez Barrios was injured and demanded justice for this case.

The attack occurred at the same time as another homicide recorded in Mexico City, but in the Roma Sur neighborhood, where a woman was killed aboard her vehicle.

In this case, the Attorney General’s Office of Mexico City stated in a statement that it is already investigating these events and reported to the areas responsible for crimes of feminicide and gender crimes for proper follow-up.

“In addition, the General Coordination of Victim Care activated a multidisciplinary cell to provide comprehensive care to indirect victims of this incident,” he concluded.
