Mexican authorities reported the arrest in Paraguay by Hernán Bermúdez Requena, who is former Secretary of Security of Tabasco and alleged leader of the La Barredora criminal group, linked to the Jalisco Nueva Generación poster (CJNG), and signed by Interpol.
The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), Omar García Harfuch, reported the arrest of Hernán Bermúdez Requena, aka the grandfather or requena, alleged leader of the Barredora, in a coordinated operation between different security agencies, “by instructions of the president”, Claudia Sheinbaum.
“We appreciate the collaboration and support of the authorities of the Republic of Paraguay,” added García Harfuch, in a message in his X account, accompanied by a photograph of the detainee.
Bermúdez Requena was appointed Secretary of Security in the State of Tabasco in 2019 by the then Governor Adam Augusto López Hernández, who now serves as senator of the official National Regeneration Movement (Morena), after having served as Secretary of the Interior (Interior) in the former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024).
In a joint statement, different Mexican security agencies detailed that Bermúdez Requena was arrested in Paraguay, in collaboration with the government of that country, and subsequently, he was transferred to Mexico, where he has been available to the authorities.
They pointed out that the former Fasco official has an arrest warrant granted last February by the crimes of criminal association, extortion and express kidnapping in that state.
In addition to having a red notification issued by Interpol on July 17, and was a fugitive in Paraguay.
They said that the operation was headed by the National Intelligence Center (CNI), the Ministry of National Defense (Defense), Secretary of the Navy (Semar), Attorney General’s Office (FGR), National Guard and the SSPC.
They detailed that the detainee is one of the alleged leaders of the Barredora, a criminal cell dedicated to crimes such as drug trafficking and extortion.
They stood out as “fundamental” for the operation of the participation of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) and the CNI, “as well as the exchange of information that makes possible the new Law of the National Research and Intelligence System.”
On July 22, García Harfuch confirmed that he weighed an arrest warrant and interpol red card against Bermúdez Requena, who was investigated since 2024 for his links with organized crime.
That same day, President Sheinbaum reported in her morning press conference that since October 2024 the federal government has been cooperating with the state of Tabasco in the former official’s investigation.
According to intelligence information, Bermúdez Requena would have had links with criminals since 1999 and a possible arrest in 2006 for the execution of a farmer.
With the accusations against him for having been his “boss”, Senator López Hernández had to face the first accusations that he knew all the movements of Bermúdez Requena and the opponents began to say that it was “his García Luna”, in reference to the former Secretary of Security, now imprisoned in the United States for corruption, of former president Felipe Calderón (2006-2012).
