The family of the Mexican-Spanish activist Cecilia Monzón celebrated the “historic” conviction against the politician Javier López Zavala, who was found guilty on Tuesday for the feminicide that occurred in May 2022, in the state of Puebla, in the center of the country, and whose sentence is scheduled to be handed down on December 31.
In a statement released this day, the Monzón family recapitulated that López Zavala, Monzón’s ex-partner and former candidate for governor of Puebla in 2010, was convicted of the crime of feminicide by the Gender Perspective Prosecution Court with State Jurisdiction of the city of Puebla.
“It is a historic conviction, which applies a gender perspective and individualizes responsibility based on the evidence presented at trial,” the note highlighted.
The family explained that the Court determined that López Zavala was the one who “planned the events and provided material means to Jair Mauricio Domínguez and Silvestre Vargas Ramírez who materially proceeded, as co-authors, to shoot Cecilia Monzón on up to seven occasions, resulting in her feminicide.”
Furthermore, he highlighted that the conviction was achieved after an oral trial that began in April 2025, which included more than 80 hearings, “and despite the multiple legal appeals filed by the defendant’s defense to delay the procedure.”
The hearing to set the sentence against López Zavala will be held on December 31, 2025, in accordance with the Penal Code of the State of Puebla in force at the time of the events.
The family’s legal representation announced that they will request the maximum sentence of up to 60 years in prison for each of the accused.
Finally, the family recognized the work of the Attorney General’s Office of Puebla to reach this resolution, as well as the Government of Puebla and the Women’s Secretariat of the Government of Mexico.
And he thanked the support of the Spanish consulate in Mexico, and the NGOs and activists who have publicized the case.
“Today, we reaffirm our commitment to honor the life and work of Cecilia in her fight for the women of Puebla, Mexico by demanding the maximum penalties,” the statement concluded.
On May 21, 2022, two hitmen shot dead the activist and lawyer Cecilia Monzón, while she was driving in her vehicle through the streets of San Pedro Cholula, in Puebla.
Monzón dedicated her life to defending cases of women in situations of violence or abuse, such as physical attacks or demands for alimony; Furthermore, it highlighted the omissions of the criminal system and failures in justice that are committed against those who are part of the political sphere in Puebla.
Days before her murder, the lawyer went to the Prosecutor’s Office to demand alimony from the father of her son, López Zavala, former Secretary of the State Interior with former Governor Mario Marín (2005-2011), accused of operating a pedophile ring and torturing the journalist who revealed it, Lydia Cacho.
