Relatives, accompanied by politicians, carried out this Monday the funeral of Alejandro Arcos Catalán, mayor of Chilpancingo, who had taken office just six days before and was murdered on Sunday, amid the demand for justice for the crime.
The funeral, which was also attended by citizens, took place in the Church of Santa Cruz de Chilpancingo and, according to local media, this afternoon there would be another religious ceremony in the Cathedral of the Assumption, in the center of the city.
While the funeral ceremony was taking place, hundreds of people demonstrated outside the religious center to demand justice for the politician’s murder.
“Alejandro always sought to become the president of the capital, Chilpancingo, and they took him away from us,” a citizen told a local media outlet while holding up a banner with the message: ‘No more blood’ and ‘Justice for our president.’ ‘.

The protests occurred just hours after authorities found the decapitated body of Arcos Catalán in Chilpancingo.
Ministerial authorities indicated that minutes before 5:00 p.m. local time, neighbors reported to the authorities a human head on the awning of a vehicle.
The agents indicated that the body of the mayor, who had taken office last Monday, was inside the vehicle in the passenger seat.
Days before, the general secretary of the Government of Arcos, Francisco Tapia, had also been murdered.
After that, the politician asked the governor of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado, for protection during a radio program, when questioned by journalist Manuel Feregrino.

“Of course yes (I need protection). We are not people of conflict,” responded Arcos Catalán.
This Monday, during her morning press conference, Claudia Sheinbaum assured that her Government is carrying out the necessary investigations to clarify the mayor’s crime.
“Regarding the unfortunate event of the municipal president of Chilpancingo, the case was presented this morning, the necessary investigations are being carried out to find out what the motive was, what the motive was and of course make the corresponding arrests,” said the president.

After taking office, Arcos Catalán assured that his main commitment was to “guarantee peace and security in the municipality” and that he would fulfill this “hand in hand with the Mexican Army.”
Criminal violence in Guerrero and the capital Chilpancingo has been increasing in recent years with constant disputes between organized crime groups for territorial control for drug trafficking, extortion and other crimes.
