Four environmental organizations sued the government of President Donald Trump on Wednesday in the United States to denounce that RICE Rorcual whales and Lora turtles, endemic to the Gulf of Mexico, for the authorization of the administration to the extraction of oil and gas.

The Earthjustice association filed the demand on behalf of the Sierra Club, the Center for Biological Diversity, Friends of the Earth and the Turtle Island Restoration Network against the US Marine Fishing Service for making an “inadequate” opinion that “allows amazing damage to the species of the Gulf”.

“The last biological opinion of the Trump administration is a new gift so that the great oil companies destroy the Gulf of Mexico and eradicate Rice’s rord, in serious danger of extinction,” said Hallie Templeton, legal director of friends of the Earth, in a positioning.

Although the Department of Interior of the United States can lease areas of the Gulf of Mexico to oil and gas companies or authorize perforations, the fishing service must first evaluate the risk of threatened and endangered species.

But the groups ensure that the fishing service had to complete a new biological opinion because a federal court declared the previous one illegal.

The Gulf of Mexico houses Rice’s Rorcual, a species with less than 100 remaining copies, in addition to being home to five of the seven species of sea turtles in the world: winding turtles, lute turtles, hawksbill turtles, lora turtles and green turtles, according to Earthjustice.

“The Trump administration is working hard to give free way to polluting companies on our lands and waters, while wildlife and gulf ecosystems in danger are paying the consequences,” said Devorah Ancel, main lawyer of Sierra Club.

According to the opinion of the fishing service, which the plaintiffs accessed, only the clashes with vessels will kill nine RICE rts and injure three more in the next 45 years.

In addition, they argue that the fishing service recognizes that these activities will kill or damage hundreds of sea turtles every year due to collisions with boats, explosions, marine waste and oil spills.

Organizations recalled the Dispwater Horizon Platform disaster in 2010, when more than 100,000 animals protected by the Endangered Species Law were damaged or damaged.

“The whales and marine turtles in danger of extinction of the Gulf will not survive the Trump administration attack on our environmental laws if we do not stop it,” said Joanie Steinhaus, director of oceans of the Turtle Island Restoration Network.
