A judge issued a formal imprisonment to the former governor of Tamaulipas (1999-2004), Tomás Yarrington, for crimes against health in favor of drug trafficking.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), through the Prosecutor’s Office Specialized in Organized Crime (FEMDO), informed that he obtained from the second district judge of federal criminal proceedings in the state of Tamaulipas, based in Matamoros, the decision “for crimes against health in the collaboration modality”.

The FGR recalled that on April 9, authorities of the United States deported in the Garita El Chaparral, in the border Tijuana, Baja California, the aforementioned person, who was informed of the arrest warrant against him for the crime indicated, while his rights were read.

Subsequently, he was transferred to the Altiplano prison, in the State of Mexico, where he was available to the judge who claimed him.

Yarrington, 68, was arrested on April 9, 2017 in Florence, Italy, and extradited on April 20, 2019 to the United States, where he faced several positions and was sentenced to nine years in prison, after declaring himself guilty of money laundering in March 2021.

According to a protected witness, who was part of the Gulf Cartel, he accused him that in his quality of governor he facilitated drug trafficking, he accepted bribes and committed the crime of money laundering.

On April 10, President Claudia Sheinbaum, explained in her morning conference that Yarrington’s extradition from the United States to Mexico was part of a legal process that was already a long time ago although she said that there are different requests between the government of both countries
