Retail prices of gasoline in the United States will rise in the coming weeks because the new tariffs imposed by the government of President Donald Trump increase the cost of energy imports, according to operators and analysts.

The perspective underlines a potentially unwanted consequence of Trump’s protectionist commercial policies, which are destined to boost the economy of the United States, but that instead could lead to larger invoices for consumers.

A 25% tariff above all imports from Mexico, another of 10% on Canadian energy and a duplication of fees on 20% Chinese products entered into force on Tuesday.

The Trump government also imposed 25% taxes to all other Canadian imports.

That has already caused an increase in wholesale prices of gasoline in the northeast of the United States, a region that depends largely on Canadian gas shipments, fuel for heating and diesel, according to the Tacenergy fuel distributor.

According to retail fuel experts, this rise will begin to impact soon in the New England suppliers and could mean between 20 and 40 cents more per gallon. The United States imports about 4 million barrels per day of Canadian oil, 70% of which is processed in west medium refineries specifically designed for Canadian crude.
