On the coasts of Baja California Sur, where the sea defines not only the landscape but also the life of hundreds of coastal communities, the strata of climate change impose a new reality for the population and companies.

In recent years, sea level in the region has increased, as well as the temperature of the ocean, which has modified fishing seasons and, in general, has impacted the economy of this state of the north of the country that, according to INEGI, reports one of the lowest labor informality rates in Mexico.

With the sight of contributing to the resolution of these challenges, the impact investment firms BFA Global and New Ventures, chose the Cortés Sea region to bring the international program to Mexico Triggering Exponential Climate Action o Teak, for its acronym in English that, since 2022, operates in several countries in Africa, strengthening cooperatives and entrepreneurship that take advantage of natural resources in a sustainable way and promote businesses that benefit communities.

The PayPal Technology, Coppel Foundation, the insurer Swiss Re, Builders Initiative, National Monte de Piedad and innovations Alumbra, foundation of the philanthontrap Christy R. Walton, reported by Forbes as of the most wealthy women in the United States, financed the first edition of the program; which invested 1 MDD in the formation and incubation of climatic entrepreneurs with impact on the marine and coastal ecosystem of the region.

Through a public call, Teca Mexico selected 10 Sudcalifornian entrepreneurs with the potential to develop adaptation to climate change, conservation of biodiversity and carbon mitigation. After an incubation process of 34 weeks, each of the sectioned received 20 thousand as seed capital.

Among those selected there are entrepreneurs focused on sustainable fishing, abulon, lion hand clam and other species, as well as in the design and manufacture of materials for the restoration of coral reefs, and in recycling and generation of renewable energy.

To date, 60% of entrepreneurs who are in the process of incubation are already generating new formal jobs in the peace zone from their participation in the Teca Mexico program, which reduces the migration rate and encourages social cohesion in families, companies and communities.

Exclusively for Forbes Mexico, Mariana Madero, project director of New Ventures, said that the second edition of the program is confirmed and will begin in September 2025.

According to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNUDI), all companies, regardless of their size, must contribute to decarbonization and adoption of sustainable practices to mitigate climate change; Although micro, small and medium enterprises face obstacles such as access to financing and training to carry out these commitments.
