A magistrate died in a shooting attack in Acapulco, a day after the president, Claudia Sheinbaum, held a security council there with the main local authorities to address the crisis of violence in several areas of the country.
Edmundo Román Pinzón, former president of the Superior Court of Justice of Guerrero, died from several gunshot wounds on Wednesday afternoon in his car, according to images of the crime scene shared in local media reports.
The state prosecutor’s office said the crime was being investigated and the highest local authority promised justice. “We will not allow this crime to go unpunished,” wrote the state governor, Evelyn Salgado, on social networks.
Acapulco and Guerrero in general have witnessed in recent years a progressive increase in violence related to drug cartels, including armed attacks that have ended the lives of politicians and candidates for elected office.
In October, the mayor of the state capital, Chilpancingo, was murdered just days after taking office in a brutal crime that sparked outrage even in a region where this type of violence has become increasingly common.
Security forces had flanked Acapulco just one day before Pinzón’s violent death, coinciding with Sheinbaum’s visit and the meeting he held with security officials and state governors.
As a presidential candidate, the president promised to repeat the success she had as mayor of Mexico City in reducing the capital’s homicide rate.
However, his first months in office have been marked by an outbreak of cartel violence in several hotspots, including the northern state of Sinaloa, where homicides have increased even as the government has deployed hundreds of soldiers to the area.
