Gildardo González Saldívar, president of the National Confederation of Potato Producers (CONPAPA), said that the importation of processed (or stock market) is taking market, so they launched campaign Apapachrate to show off the benefits and benefits of the tuber cultivated in Mexico.

“It is up to three times higher the value of the transformed potato (bought in the stock market in Canada, the United States and Belgium for consumption in Mexico), than of the Mexican Pope,” he answered the question of whether that trade is eating the market.

He said there is a boom among merchants by imported potato due to comfort, more than an economic issue.

He added that every year in Mexico there are 1.9 million tons of fresh potato, which generates investments close to 2 billion dollars, and that all that business dynamic benefits more than 8,700 farmers.

“The importation of processed potato has been growing and right now more than 300 thousand tons are bought (abroad), which we could talk about a complete region of potato production such as northern Sinaloa,” said the businessman.

He said that merchants pay for the conservation of potatoes, and for not cutting or peeling the food commonly served as entry into food or accompaniment of hamburgers.

The campaign is to compete to the import of the tuber and increase, in a first stage, up to 20 percent the consumption of Mexican Pope.

“Because of its versatility and its contribution in food, the Conpa took the initiative to undertake a Mexican potato campaign dedicated to promoting the consumption of the Mexican pope,” said González Saldívar.

Leonel Cota Montaño, Undersecretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, recognized the effort of the Conpa to promote the consumption of national potatoes and strengthen the Mexican countryside.

“Give them the congratulation of the Government of the Republic for this effort that was made this year, and wish that it remains very solid to be able to have a basic product at the table of Mexicans, a high quality product,” he said.

Jorge Esteve, president of the National Agricultural Council (CNA), indicated that this campaign celebrates the consumption of the Mexican Pope.

“I want to recognize Conpapa very deeply for this great initiative. We will be closely following and leverage their ideas and experiences to arouse the awareness that generates pride and that motivates Mexicans to choose ours, the Mexican, what our land produces. Because behind each Pope there is a great story that is worth sharing,” he said.
