The livestock sector in Mexico warned of economic losses in the face of the growing tensions caused by the temporal closure of the US border to exports of Mexican cattle due to health problems with the boreride worm.

The measure has taken by surprise the Mexican livestock sector, which faces long delays in the inspection processes, in the midst of a greater demand for health controls by the authorities of both countries, according to the most recent ‘Weekly Agrifood Weekly Report’ of the Agricultural Market Consulting Group (GCMA).

The report maintains that national livestock prices remain “stable” outside the commercial closure with the US, although “market concern persists” for its possible effects.

To this is added its concern about the opening of new verification points announced by the Mexican health regulator, “where serious delays in animal inspection are reported due to the lack of official personnel.”

“Livestocks demand a prompt response from the authorities to avoid economic losses and safeguard animal welfare,” reads the report.

According to the World Animal Health Organization, on April 29, 563 cases of Barrenador worm have been registered, especially concentrated in the southern part of the country.

It also realizes that Mexico has implemented 17 federal verification and inspection points (PVIF) and prepares a new one in Pedregal, Veracruz.

In relation to these measures, President Claudia Sheinbaum commented on her conference at the National Palace that sanitary measures are strengthened to prevent a propagation can be proposed.

“And there is also coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture of the United States Government. And there are several actions that we also want to take, that we are already going to inform them,” he said, while considering “difficult” to close the border permanently.

In this context, the GCMA explained that the sacrifice of cattle in the US registered 559,000 heads, a stable figure compared to the previous week, although 10% lower than the levels of a year ago.

According to the report, the greatest concern of producers is the difficulties in meeting the new health requirements, noting that the lack of personnel at the inspection points has caused significant delays, affecting both the quality of livestock and its weight, at a critical moment for the Mexican meat industry.
