President Claudia Sheinbaum signed an agreement with tortilla market participants on Thursday in order to strengthen the production chain and avoid increases in the price of basic food.

Through her X account, the president reported: “In the National Palace, we sign the National Corn-Tormilla Agreement with producers, marketers, flour, nixtamaleros and tortilleros to improve the production chain and maintain prices.”

During the morning, Sheinbaum explained that it is a “voluntary agreement so that the price of the tortilla does not rise.”

He explained that the purpose of this measure is to reduce the participation of intermediaries between those who grow corn and those who process it:

“The objective is to be bought (…), that is, that there is less intermediary between the one who sells corn and the one that processes it, and that there are direct agreements between the producer and the processor to reduce all intermediaryism.”

He pointed out that much of the increase in the price of the tortilla is due to these intermediaries, so he considered that “it is a very important agreement, since the tortilla is the main food in our country.”

In addition, he commented that as a complementary part of the agreement, a program is being implemented through well -being stores for well -being, focused on the poorest areas of the country.

The objective is to achieve a reduction in the price of the omelette, both in which they are acquired in self -service stores and in the tortillerías.
