The compensatory quota of 17.09% imposed by the US to Mexican tomatoes is a setback in the integration of North America, said the National Agricultural Council (CNA).
The agency added that the measure also puts at risk the food security of the region, to national producers, to the members of the productive chain and US consumers, which will invariably imply a price increase, impacting the daily consumption food derived from the product.
“Commercial barriers, far from resolving imbalances, generate uncertainty, increase consumers costs and damage the well -being of millions of families on both sides of the border,” said the agency led by Jorge Esteve in a statement.
He added that Mexico supplies nine out of 10 tomatoes that imports the United States, which represents 55% of total consumption in that country: “This interdependence has been key to maintaining an efficient, safe, healthy and resilient agri -food chain throughout the region.”

“We express our concern about the unilateral decision of the United States Department of Commerce to impose an Ad Valorem Compensatory quota of 17.09% to Mexican fresh tomato imports,” he said.
The agency stressed that Mexico has proven to be a global leader in the production of tomatoes thanks to its diversity of climates, technological innovation and decades of investment in sustainable agricultural systems.
“Our offer has been consolidated by its quality, variety and efficiency, characteristics that the US market recognizes and values,” he said.
Jorge Esteve has pointed out that Mexico has natural advantages and a productive vocation that has allowed him to position himself as a key jitomate provider for the United States, hardly substitutable, the organization recalled.
