While there are countless indie gameson Steam to sort through, a few titles stand out from the rest for being a masterclass in their respective genres. Even if you aren’t a fan of the roguelike genre as a whole, the award-winning Darkest Dungeon is a must-play RPG for any horror fan, especially with this astronomically low price.
As announced on the official DarkestDungeon X account, Red Hook Studios is hosting a massive sale for its horror series, which includes a 92% discount on the original Darkest Dungeon and a 69% discount on its sequel, Darkest Dungeon 2. With the deal only lasting until February 12, you don’t have long to grab this cheap title with over 30-60 hours worth of gameplay to experience, depending on your playstyle.
Darkest Dungeon Is Only $2 On Steam Right Now
While a 92% sale sounds great on paper, it’s even better when you consider that it brings Darkest Dungeon all the way down to $1.99 USD. Considering the sheer amount of content and gameplay variety there is to experience in the game, it’s an excellent deal.
Despite being released over a decade ago, the hand-drawn art style of Darkest Dungeon and creative gameplay mechanics have held up incredibly well as one of the best horror roguelikes of all time.
The only downside to jumping into Darkest Dungeon after so long is that it can be a little overwhelming to get a grasp on its brutal gameplay mechanics at first. Luckily, there have been plenty of guides and gameplay tips to let you overcome the horrors lurking beneath its haunted manors and deadly catacombs.
Few Titles Can Compete With Darkest Dungeon’s Tension-Filled Gameplay
Offering turn-based combat that emphasizes the unique differences between its character types, Darkest Dungeon‘s roguelike dungeon-crawling gameplay loop can be surprisingly addictive and replayable.
Darkest Dungeon‘s permadeath mechanics make each battle just as risky as a tense life-or-death boss encounter, but it also isn’t content to stick to standard roguelike mechanics. An incredibly unique sanity mechanic forces you to manage not just the health of your fragile party members, but also their mental well-being.
After receiving enough mental damage or traumatic experiences, your characters will enter a stress-like state, which can result in a disastrous mental affliction if you fail to manage it properly. If you can overcome it, however, you’ll earn the opportunity to boost the mood of your team as a whole.
Darkest Dungeon 2‘s transition to a 3D style and more generic gameplay mechanics fail to capture what made the original game so unique, but both Darkest Dungeon titles are excellent horror games that are well worth their current asking price if you’re up for the challenge.
