Organized crime has found a new tool for propaganda and attract young people to their ranks in Tiktok. This is noted by a study conducted by the Seminar on Violence and Peace of The College of Mexico, which documents the use of more than a hundred accounts in this social network for recruitment purposes.

The report, entitled New borders in digital recruitmentanalyze how cartels such as the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel (CDS) take advantage of Tiktok’s own dynamics – including hashtags, music, viral audios and attractive visual content – to build narratives that seduce young people.

According to the study, the CJNG leads the use of the platform as a collection channel. The researchers identified profiles that disseminated false job offers, promising lodging, payment and training, often under labels such as #4letras, #Mencho o #workparalaña.

“Tiktok is not just entertainment, it is also a space where organized crime is building identity, community and promises of belonging,” warns the document.

The analysis indicates that the accounts used have explicit references to organized crime, through the use of symbols, expressions and songs that glorify criminal life and promote a culture of violence.

The research was developed by the Hate and Concord Laboratory of the Seminar on Violence and Peace, in collaboration with the Civic Ai Lab of the University of Northeastern, in the United States.
