For Araceli Becerril, director of Corporate Responsibility at L’Oréal Mexico, in the time that the brand has been investing in environmental issues, they have discovered that the collaboration and involvement of various actors are key to addressing the urgent challenge that we face globally. .
“We know the responsibility we have as pioneers in the industry, since since the early 90s we have been working scientifically on environmental issues. That is why we have outlined a series of medium and long-term objectives, because we know that isolated efforts alone are not enough. Initiatives like For the future They seek to empower the entire business system to advance faster. That includes making life easier for the consumer, but also educating them so that together we can protect the beauty of our planet,” he explains.
Measurable results under a 360º strategy
Achieving a structural change that truly impacts the ecosystem towards a sustainable planet requires a complete strategy, but also traceable and scientifically based objectives. Just as has been L’Oréal’s vision since its founding. Currently, the company has 4 thousand scientific researchers, in 20 centers in various parts of the world, all with the mission of contributing to ecological issues, beyond improving and perfecting its formulas.
“On the one hand, our history demands it from us as we are a company whose origin is purely scientific, but also this year the same scientific community asked us to raise the indicators, because they are aware that we need to move faster on the environmental issue and that was why that we raise them to the level that is required. That is the origin of drawing up such a detailed 2030 project,” explained Araceli Becerril.
L’Oréal’s objectives for 2030 include:
- Ensure that 100% of the water used in industrial processes is recycled and reused.
- Innovate so that consumers can reduce water consumption linked to the use of L’Oréal products by 25%.
- Ensure that 100% bio-based ingredients for formulas and packaging materials are traceable and sustainably sourced.
- That 100% of the plastic used in packaging is recycled or of biological origin.
- That 100% of the employees of strategic suppliers earn at least a living wage that covers their basic needs and those of their dependents.
- Empower the brand’s 1.5 billion consumers to make informed and more sustainable consumer decisions.
L’Oréal’s budget to achieve its environmental commitments is 195 million euros, distributed across different points of the strategy, although for the company, according to Araceli Becerril, the true transformative effect will happen when the entire ecosystem manages to get involved and raise awareness with joint actions.
