Isaac del Toro (UAE) highlighted the “cruelty of cycling” after losing the Rose Maglia of the Giro of Italy in the last and decisive mountain stage, in which the British Simon Yates took power, who took advantage of the fight between the Mexican and the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz.
“This is the cruel of cycling. I am very happy to finish second. This week I showed that I can compete for the final victory. I surprised many people with that, but not my team,” said Del Toro when crossing the goal.
The Cyclist of Ensenada commented on the moment in which Simon Yates attacked while he and Carapaz controlled each other.
“Richard was second in the classification, so I thought it was logical that he went out behind Yates. Although I had the feeling that I could follow the British, I had to follow Carapaz first. If I lost the Maglia Rosa I also did not want to lose the second place,” he explained.
With Yates remote, from the bull he asked for collaboration to Carapaz, but the Ecuadorian was not for the work.
“In the last part of the climb I tried to work with Carapaz, but he did not want to. Nor could I give everything to my wheel, because then I would attack myself in the back. And if I lost the classification, I also did not want to lose the second place,” he said.
Del Toro considered that he had nothing to regret.
“It wasn’t a bet. I did what I thought smarter. But they all played their tricks, although Visma did it very well with Waut Go up. I take off my hat before them!” He said.
Del Toro will end the turn with the feeling of having been able to win it.
“I think I could have won the turn, but that is the cruel of cycling. That’s why we love it. Sometimes you win, sometimes it is lost. Of course, it is disappointing, but you have to realize how important this race is,” he concluded.
