A redundant Norse god trend has been seen on the big and small screens for a long time, but Prime Video‘s casting of Thor in its God of War adaptation can finally end this for good.

Every time the name of the Norse god, Thor, is mentioned, it is hard not to think about Chris Hemsworth’s super-heroic iteration in the MCU. There is nothing inherently wrong with the MCU’s Thor, and Chris Hemsworth has also done a great job of playing the character for so long. However, it has become hard not to grow a little tired of the non-serious and gimmicky portrayal of the Norse god on the small screen.

Prime Video’s God of War seems to have taken the right step forward to finally end this trend by casting a Severance star to play Thor in its small-screen adaptation.

In the God of War games’ Norse saga, Thor is no heroic protector with godly virtues. Instead, he is portrayed more as an antagonist who feels trapped by his past and struggles to grow beyond his troubled relationship with Odin. The games do not shy away from capturing his ruthlessness and brutality, which makes him a stark contrast to his portrayal on the big screens in MCU flicks.

By ensuring that a talented actor like Ólafur Darri Ólafsson plays him, Prime Video’s God of War almost promises to stay true to the games’ portrayal of the Norse god.

This, in turn, will finally break the trend of portraying Thor as a one-note, wisecracking superhero and restore the darker, more morally complex version of the Norse god. Even in terms of physical appearance, the MCU made Thor more appealing to the masses by giving him long luscious hair, a ripped physique, and clean-cut features.

Unlike Chris Hemsworth, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson has a more strongman-eque body, making him the perfect fit for the God of War games‘ adaptation.

By playing Mr. Drummond in Severance, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson has already established his ability to portray intimidating characters. Getting Thor right will obviously require a lot more physicality and explosiveness, but his memorable performances in movies and shows like Trapped, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and Somebody Somewhere proves he has the range to be the perfect live-action Thor.

Thor’s Doomsday Return Is Exciting, But His God Of War Live-Action Iteration Seems No Less Compelling

Thor in God of War Ragnarok

Considering the brand strength and popularity of the MCU, it is hard to look forward to Thor’s return in Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to be released on December 18, 2026. However, the same character’s live-action iteration in the upcoming God of War show now seems no less exciting since the show has gotten the casting right.

Given how God of War is still in its early stages of production, it cannot be expected to premiere before 2027. But its early casting choices suggest that it is on the right path towards capturing the games’ dark, mythologically grounded tone.

If all goes well for Prime Video‘s highly anticipated God of War adaptation, it could not only set a new benchmark for fantasy game adaptations but also redefine how Norse gods like Thor are portrayed on screen.
