One of Tom Hardy and Leonardo DiCaprio’s great films is returning to theaters in the biggest format possible.
The Revenant just reached its tenth anniversary (having been released at the very end of 2015). Alejandro González Iñárritu’s gritty Western, gearing up for a theatrical re-release, stars DiCaprio as a fur trader in the 1820s who is betrayed and left for dead by his own team while on an expedition. Thus, the protagonist is launched on a brutal mission of survival and revenge.
Hardy portrays the primary villain in The Revenant, which also stars Will Poulter and Domhnall Gleeson. The film previously grossed $533 million and won three Oscars, including Best Director for Iñárritu, despite Best Picture going to Spotlight that year. Now, per IMAX’s website, The Revenant will be released exclusively in select IMAX theaters from February 26 to March 1.
In addition to winning Best Cinematography, The Revenant is also remembered as being DiCaprio’s first acting Oscar win after famously missing multiple times. The Revenant was nominated in nine more Oscar categories, including Best Supporting Actor for Hardy. It currently has a Tomatometer of 78% and a Popcornmeter of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Ironically, DiCaprio’s 2025 movie One Battle After Another is also returning to IMAX soon, after scoring 13 Oscar nominations. Sinners, One Battle After Another‘s biggest competitor this awards season, will also get an IMAX re-release in the next few weeks. Now, The Revenant is also in the mix of upcoming screenings.
Since 2015, DiCaprio has starred in the highly acclaimed films Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Don’t Look Up, and Killers of the Flower Moon. 2015 was a monumental year in Hardy’s career as he also appeared in one of the best action movies of all time, Mad Max: Fury Road. Hardy went on to star in Dunkirk, the Venom movies, and additional episodes of Peaky Blinders.
Alejandro González Iñárritu won Best Director two years in a row, as at the time of The Revenant, he was coming off Best Picture winner Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). Now, the filmmaker is preparing to release Digger in October 2026, a highly anticipated dark comedy starring Tom Cruise.
But first, fans of Iñárritu’s filmmaking may revisit The Revenant, at home or in an IMAX theater, if they live near one.
