The Secretary of Finance and Public Credit, Rogelio Ramírez de la O, assured this Wednesday that the government of President Claudia Sheinbaum will allocate resources for Mexico to advance towards the energy transition, in addition to allowing the collaboration of private initiatives.
“The construction of geothermal, wind and photovoltaic plants, and green hydrogen facilities will be promoted, highlighting projects such as the Puerto Peñasco solar plant, essential to move towards energy self-sufficiency,” said the secretary during his appearance before the Plenary Session of the Chamber. of Deputies to give details of the 2025 Economic Package.
The official assured that collaboration with private initiatives will accelerate the development of clean energy and strengthen energy infrastructure, to position Mexico as a benchmark in the global sustainability agenda.
In this sense, the Center for Economic and Budgetary Research (CIEP) analyzed that 1 billion pesos allocated in the Draft Expenditure Budget of the Federation 2025, the energy sector presents a reduction of 4.6% compared to 2024 and 33.6% in comparison with 2021.
He specified that it is proposed to strengthen the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) with a 5.5% increase in its budget, aimed at improving the generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy. On the other hand, Pemex would have a 10.5% cut. The reduction is concentrated in the Hydrocarbon Economic Infrastructure Projects program, with a drop of 18.9%.
Regarding spending on the environment, Rogelio Ramírez de la O asserted that it is a very high expense because it contains the conclusion of large projects, which does not necessarily have to be replicated the same project the following year in the same amount.
In this regard, the CIEP warned that the environmental budget will face a cut of 39.4%, mainly affecting the water sector, where CONAGUA will suffer a decrease of 43.2%, putting access to water for the most vulnerable communities at risk.
“These adjustments pose a challenge in terms of energy transition and climate change,” said the research center.
