The president of the United States, Donald Trump, defended his trade policy and assured that the tariffs he imposed on the rest of the countries and territories “have brought peace to the world.”

“Having the ability to manage trade and use tariffs to make my point clear has brought peace to the world. Tariffs have brought peace to the world,” Trump said in a telephone interview on Fox News in which he reported on the agreement between Israel and Hamas for the Gaza Strip.

The president was asked about his “efforts to achieve peace in the world” and his relations with the Arab countries that led to this agreement and highlighted the role of his trade policy in achieving it.

“Not just here, but with many other agreements. I have made seven peace agreements, in which countries had been fighting, in many cases, 30 or 31 years, 135 or 137 years, and in which millions of people have been killed. I made peace, and I did, not in all cases, but probably in at least five of the seven that we have made so far, through trade,” he added.

The Republican usually claims that he put an end to seven international conflicts: Cambodia-Thailand, Kosovo-Serbia, Democratic Republic of the Congo-Rwanda, Pakistan-India, Israel-Iran, Egypt-Ethiopia and Armenia-Azerbaijan.

Trump relies on his tariffs for peace diplomacy

During his interview, he defended his strict commercial vision as part of his foreign policy and his diplomacy to establish agreements with other countries and to end conflicts.

“We are not going to deal with people who fight. We are not going to do business and we are going to put tariffs on them. We are not going to let them trade in the United States either. We are going to put tariffs on them,” he commented.

“Much more than even the money we get, which is essentially trillions of dollars, what’s much more important about tariffs is that it gives you a tremendous path toward peace and the saving of millions of lives, just millions and millions,” he concluded.

Since he started his trade war, Trump has signed trade agreements with some countries such as the United Kingdom, South Korea, Cambodia, Thailand and the European Union.
